Spend hours gazing at the Earth's breathtaking beauty without straining your neck. Near the Lunar poles, the Earth appears very low above the horizon.

Lunar Explorer is the world's most accurate and complete simulation of the Moon.
Former Foundation Return to the Moon Project Manager, Manny Pimenta, and VirtuePlay have developed the Lunar Explorer. It is built on a revolutionary software architecture called RADE(TM) that enables the entire Moon simulation to run in real time on home computers and laptops.

Explore the Moon from space and pick a spot to investigate. Go into Lunar orbit and then land on the surface. Examine relics from the Space Race. Fly over the Lunar terrain, or hop from one location to another. Take off from the surface into space or use the Autopilot navigation feature to effortlessly take you to any of your favorite locations.

Data from multiple sources have been integrated into a highly realistic and visually stunning representation of the Moon – not just patches of the Lunar surface – the ENTIRE MOON is yours to explore; from 260 km out in space all the way down to the surface.

Sources include:
• Global 3D topography data derived from the NASA/DOD Clementine Mission
• NASA mission reports
• NASA drawings and photographs of equipment sent to the Moon
• Descriptions of all the objects on the Lunar surface
• Audio clips of astronauts on the Moon
• and much more

Visit the six Apollo sites, the five Surveyor sites and the seven Russian Luna mission sites. All the successful historic landing sites have been simulated. At each of the sites, examine up close the modules and mission artifacts that were left behind and are still there today. At the Apollo sites, you will find the Landing Module, Rovers, S-Band antennas, flags, and surface experiments. At the Russian sites, investigate the Luna 9 (the first successful Moon landing), the robotic sample return missions and the Lunokhod robotic Lunar rovers.

Using RADE, the global topography data from the Clementine mission was turned into the primary layer. Synthesized Level of Detail (LOD) layers were then superimposed on the global topography data. The LOD layers are turned on sequentially as you descend closer and closer to the Lunar surface.

Other Features:
• Control the position of the Sun to create dramatic lighting effects such as sunrises and sunsets.
• Go inside the Apollo Lunar Modules.
• Take snapshots of your favorite views or locations and save them to disk.
• Look for the Earth and see its changing phases as you control the position of the Sun. The Earth actually rotates so each time you look at it you will see a different view.
• An accurate star field can be toggled on or off. Find familiar constellations in the sky.
• Free Camera Mode closely simulates flying and hopping over the lunar surface.
• Listen to sound bites of the Apollo astronauts on the Moon.

"You have created a phenomenal opportunity
for all of us to explore the Moon. Terrific!"

– Dan Curry, Visual Effects Director for Star Trek The Next Generation,
Deep Space 9, Star Trek Voyager and seven time Emmy Award winner

The Frontier Enabling Test
Our definition of a "frontier enabling" technology or policy is one which has as its effect the acceleration of the creation of low cost access to the space frontier for private citizens and companies, enables or accelerates our use of space resources, and/or accelerates the rate at which wealth can be generated in space. In other words, is the project or policy going to provide a return on the national investment, if we define "return" to be the economically sustainable human habitation of space?
