Solar Eclipse Public Observation

Griffith Observatory

June 10, 2002

On June 10, 2002, a Solar Eclipse darkened the skies of Los Angeles.  Permission to Dream set up several telescopes in front of the Griffith Park Observatory to observe this rare event.  Several school kids from around LA, engineers from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, and Space Frontier Foundation members all enjoyed the 70% Eclipse – something which will not be visible again from Los Angeles for several decades.

Because the eclipse started in the late afternoon, several kids were able to join us.

We tracked the progress of the eclipse as it was projected through one of the many telescopes we brought.
When not checking out the eclipse projections from the telescopes, participants could look directly at the eclipse with protective solar filters.
