Camp Joan Mier

July 11, 2002

The Permission to Dream team happily returned to Camp Joan Mier on July 11, 2002 to teach fifty developmentally disabled adult campers, aged 35 to 70, about the universe.  These campers enjoyed a presentation by the group on how telescopes work, and the highlights of the Apollo 11 lunar landing.  Some of the campers remembered exactly where they were when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon for the very first time.

Another extremely enthusiastic camper knew many details about the Apollo 11 lunar landing.

One of the evening’s highlights was a special slide show presented by PTD director John Wright.  The slide show took everyone present on a comprehensive tour of the solar system.

Margee, the PTD intern, gave a special presentation on how the PTD telescope works.

Following the slide show, campers and their staff members moved outside, where the Permission to Dream team set up telescopes for their viewing pleasure.  Unfortunately, clouds covered the moon and Venus for most of the evening, but the campers discovered that they could use the telescopes to see crosswalk lights and construction lights miles down the road!
