Camp Joan Mier
June 21, 2002
On June 10, 2002, Permission to Dream visited Camp Joan Mier, a camp for developmentally disabled individuals located just north of Los Angeles. The evening began with an orientation to the Moon and the Earth, conducted by PTD staffers Margee Prat, John Wright, and George Whitesides. With the help of camp volunteers Tanya and Calvin, the PTD team demonstrated lessons like scale, distance, and the principle of eclipses. Then, in the highlight of the evening, all sixty campers and forty staff moved outside to observe the Moon through three PTD Meade telescopes. Everyone was given a chance to look through the telescopes, and all received a Space Frontier Foundation sticker as recognition of being a lunar explorer. Camp Director Kelly Privett thanked PTD with a great supersized card signed by all the campers.
